Central Michigan University's mascot are the Chippewas. "FIRE UP CHIPS!" reads a huge billboard just outside the football stadium. In Mt. Pleasant, "bird" is the word when it comes to students, professors, alumni and locals. This family-owned bar and grill, in the heart of Downtown Mt. Pleasant, has been serving the community for nearly 90 years. The tribe's Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in nearby Chippewa Township is also within the reservation boundaries. You went from oil boom to college town to casino destination – it's like a midlife crisis that lasted a century.
