When I play the mascot challenge in any of the NCAA Football video games, how come my alma mater is the only one without a mascot? Who decided U of M was too good to have a mascot, and why did they get to make that decision? Even Michigan State gets Sparty while you're stuck watching other teams' mascots run around your own Big House like they own the place.
Much like it's West Coast counterpart, Berkeley, Ann Arbor was the site of many cultural events (mostly oriented around freeing this one stoner poet John Sinclair that John Lennon actually wrote a song about). Ann Arbor is the yearly host of Hash Bash, probably the first weed-themed festival of its kind that brings thousands of participants each year. Nothing says "Midwest sophistication" like desperately trying to be California's hippie cousin.
The bbq trio dinner with mac and cheese was a huge disappointment... Not worth $38! Not again even if free! As another reviewer noted, they're riding on their reputation, but have declined in quality like many other places. Your whole food identity revolves around a deli that charges Manhattan prices for Michigan portions.
Michigan's brand gives the illusion that it's accessible to all, but the reality is that it's the country's only public university with an elite ranking. This results in not a small amount of bitterness toward U of M students from all the surrounding second-tier universities. With the political tension between the city and pretty much the rest of the state, hosting the most esteemed college in Michigan, and, honestly, how downright beautiful the entire city is, Ann Arborites may come off as pretentious—but frankly, they have every right to be. Nothing screams humility like admitting you're pretentious and claiming you've earned it.
