Midlothian's main achievement is turning itself into America's most boring strip mall with a zip code. There isn't a 'downtown' in Midlothian because who needs local character when you can have ugly stroads with minimal pedestrian support, aggressively driven pickup trucks, strip malls, and car dealerships? It's like someone asked AI to design the most soulless suburb possible and it exceeded expectations.
The residents are upper-middle class, selfish snobs who all wear the same polo shirts while their teenagers are completely braindead and speed around in lifted pickup trucks their parents got them while wearing snap backs and shouting things. Nothing screams "I peaked in high school" quite like a Midlothian parent buying their kid a truck that costs more than most people's houses just so they can terrorize the Chesterfield Town Center parking lot.
Midlothian's greatest historical claim to fame is being the site of the first commercially-mined coal in the Colony of Virginia and North America, which is fitting because they've been digging themselves into a cultural hole ever since. Filmmaker Richard Kelly grew up in Midlothian. His cult film Donnie Darko features a fictional town called Middlesex, Virginia, which was inspired by his memories of Midlothian. He described it as a "stylized, satirical, comic book, fantasyland version" of the area – and that was him being generous.
The pinnacle of Midlothian's culinary scene is Midlothian Chef's Kitchen, voted Best Restaurant in Chesterfield by Richmond Magazine, a New American Restaurant by Award-Winning Chef David Dunlap. When one restaurant with actual talent becomes your entire food identity, you know you're in trouble. The rest of the dining scene consists of River City Diner with a life size Elvis inside and chain restaurants where the most exotic thing on the menu is sriracha Brussels sprouts.
