OFFICIAL ROAST REPORT
We're sorry. Actually, no we're not.
Spartanburg calls itself 'Sparkle City' because of a moderately successful 1950s bebop band called Joe Bennett and the Sparkletones who appeared on Ed Sullivan twice. Most locals don't even know this tragic origin story, probably because they're too embarrassed to admit their city's identity peaked with a one-hit wonder from the Eisenhower era.
The tallest building in Spartanburg is literally the corporate headquarters of Denny's, a chain famous for serving drunk college kids at 3 AM. Jerry Richardson built this 18-story monument to mediocrity using his NFL bonus money, and now the city's crown jewel is where executives decide which frozen hash browns to microwave next. Even the window washer needed therapy after rappelling down its sides.
The Beacon Restaurant is the second-largest drive-in in America, serving 'chili-cheese-a-plenty' burgers that have been clogging local arteries for 77 years. It's the kind of place where you order through a window and receive enough grease to lubricate a small aircraft. The fact that it's a point of civic pride says everything about Spartanburg's relationship with both food and self-preservation.
For 28 years, the Carolina Panthers held training camp at tiny Wofford College because apparently even professional athletes needed to lower their standards when visiting Spartanburg. The team finally wised up in 2024 and moved to Charlotte, leaving Wofford with empty fields and the lingering scent of broken dreams. Now the campus just hosts regular college kids who think they're warriors because they survived freshman orientation.
