McEwen hosts the Guinness World Record holder for World's Largest Outdoor Barbecue, which is basically like declaring yourself champion of your own made-up sport. They serve 21,000 pounds of pork to prove they're relevant once a year. The rest of the time, it's just another dot on the map where "church is about the only nightlife."
With 1,643 people spread across 1.9 square miles, McEwen has achieved the impossible: being too small to matter but too stubborn to disappear. "The people are nice but somehow still uninviting," which is small-town speak for "we smile at you but gossip about you at the post office."
U.S. Route 70 passes through the center of town, making McEwen's biggest claim to fame being a place people drive through on their way to somewhere better. "A couple of restaurants, some auto/hardware businesses, and a grocery store" apparently counts as a thriving downtown district in Tennessee math.
The town honors Robert Houston McEwen, a Unionist who opposed secession and flew a Union flag until threatened by the governor. So McEwen is literally named after someone who was too controversial for 1860s Tennessee. Most locals forgot this "inconvenient" history and made up stories about a beloved civil engineer instead.
