OFFICIAL ROAST REPORT
We're sorry. Actually, no we're not.
Martin built an entire identity around celebrating a crop nobody actually eats plain. They throw a parade for legumes that taste like nothing and produce tofu. The festival has a Miss Soybean pageant because apparently someone thought crowning a beauty queen for agricultural byproducts was peak entertainment.
Once called the "Baby Vols" because even other Tennesseans knew they were the kiddie table version of real college sports. They changed their name to Skyhawks in 1995, presumably because nothing says "fierce competitor" like a bird nobody can actually identify. At least their agricultural program is solid - someone has to study those soybeans seriously.
Martin peaked in 1970 when Esquire called them one of America's happiest towns, and they've been dining out on that compliment for 56 years. That was back when a town with concrete sidewalks and working sewers counted as sophisticated. They're still bragging about infrastructure improvements from the Eisenhower era.
Martin calls itself the "largest city in Weakley County" which is like being the tallest building in a subdivision. With a median age of 26.7, it's either a college town or everyone else fled before they turned 30. The whole place could fit in a decent shopping mall parking lot.
