Ladue, Missouri: Where the Hedges Are Trimmed and the Yard Signs Are (Eventually) Legal

Welcome to Ladue, pronounced lah-DOO, which is the first and last time anything here will be allowed to go off-script. This inner-ring suburb of St. Louis is a place where the lawns are tidy and the median income is enormous. It has also somehow made it to the U.S. Supreme Court over a lawn decoration.

Pack your loafers and your best "I'm just browsing" face. We're touring one of Missouri's most polished zip codes.

The Basics: A Very Rich, Very Quiet Slice of St. Louis County

Ladue is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, located in St. Louis County, Missouri. It was incorporated in 1936, and as of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 8,989. That's roughly enough people to fill a mid-sized arena, if any of them were willing to be seen in a mid-sized arena.

The headline stat is money. Ladue has one of the highest median household incomes of any city in Missouri. It sprawls across 8.57 square miles, so there's plenty of room for every household to maintain a respectful distance from the next one.

8,989residents per the 2020 census
Missouri's richest big-ish city, and nobody's ever been late to a book club.

Honestly, those perfectly trimmed hedges and quiet sidewalks are a flex. Most towns can't get a teenager to notice their hedges at all.

Country Club Country: Cosplaying Rural Life With a Valet

Ladue's vibe is "old money meets farm-to-table brunch." With household incomes among the highest in the state, residents have perfected the art of living in a suburban theme park and calling the strip mall "charming." There are country clubs everywhere, and you're never more than a golf cart ride from a place that requires a sponsor letter.

The schools are the town's other love language. Ladue Horton Watkins High School is known for its strong graduation and college-going rates. Even the elementary schools are overachieving, which explains the dinner-table pressure.

Local culture runs on charity galas, boutique-and-champagne evenings, and private school admissions advice. One recent local piece offered advice from 5 private schools on preparing for a parent interview. Yes, the parents get interviewed. Of course they do.

The Great Yard Sign Standoff (Ladue vs. the First Amendment)

Ladue's most famous contribution to American law is not a recipe. In December 1990, resident Margaret Gilleo placed a 3-by-2-foot sign in her front yard that read, "Say no to war in the Persian Gulf. Call Congress now." After it was stolen and a replacement was knocked down, she filed a complaint with the police, who informed her that such signs were prohibited by a local ordinance as a form of "visual pollution".

Visual pollution. In a town with a hedge reputation. Naturally, Ladue fought it all the way up. In the 1994 Supreme Court case, City of Ladue v. Gilleo, justices unanimously held that yard signs amounted to a distinct and important form of speech. That was nine justices, zero dissents, and a very expensive lesson, because the city ended up paying Gilleo's attorney fees after its final court loss. The case is now taught in law and journalism classes.

Ladue's position

  • Yard signs are visual pollution
  • Tidy lawns are sacred
  • Appeal everything

The Supreme Court

  • 9 justices, 0 dissents
  • Yard signs are protected speech
  • Ladue paid Gilleo's attorney fees

The Uncomfortable Chapter (Because We Do Our Homework)

A fair travel guide doesn't only show the hedges. Ladue's history includes some genuinely ugly episodes, and the roast cards weren't shy about them. Old Warson Country Club in Ladue has a history of membership discrimination controversy tied to hosting a PGA event.

A town that works this hard on curb appeal might consider putting the same effort into the rest of the house.

Visiting Ladue: What to Actually Do

You can't exactly "do" Ladue the way you'd do Branson. But you can:

  • Wander Tilles Park. Tilles Park is a large park within Ladue, and it's the one place where being outdoors doesn't require a membership.
  • Eat at Busch's Grove, which Wikipedia's own photo montage features alongside the town's strip mall and market.
  • Admire the leaf program. The city is gearing up for its 2026 Leaf Collection, because even autumn has to follow the schedule.
  • Say "lah-DOO" confidently. Say it like you've always known.

Final Verdict

Ladue is polished, wealthy, academically stacked, and a little too fond of rules. It's also a place with a real history and a Supreme Court case to its name, which is more than most suburbs can say.
