Cradle of industrial revolution, now cradle of nothing
Lowell's one big idea was running a textile empire off the Merrimack, and the city has been living off that résumé line for 150 years. The mills died, so the National Park Service turned them into museums and the rest into loft apartments. The city's peak is now preserved as a field trip for fourth graders.
