Spread Eagle, Wisconsin: The Town With the Most Awkward Name (and the Free Water Ski Show)

Let's get the giggling out of the way. Yes, there is a place called Spread Eagle, Wisconsin. Yes, you will say the name out loud to a friend and then pause. Yes, the sign makes for a great photo. Now that everyone has had their moment, here is what this corner of Florence County actually offers.

What's in a Name? Lakes That Look Like a Bird

Spread Eagle is an unincorporated community in Florence County, in the town of Florence, sitting at 1,197 feet above sea level. It's on Highway US-2, 6 miles west of Iron Mountain and 5 miles east of Florence.

The name is not a scandal. It comes from the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes, which, viewed from above, resemble an eagle with outstretched wings. You will need a drone, a plane, or a generous imagination to confirm this. From the ground it looks like some very pleasant lakes, and the tourism board is clearly working with what it has.

The chain is real, though. It's a set of interconnected bodies of water. The locals are organized about it too. The Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes Association is a non-profit that looks after water quality and safety, among other things. In a town with no government of its own, the lake association may be the closest thing to a city council.

That's a lot of pine barrens for a town with no downtown.

Wednesday and Sunday Nights: The Badwater Ski-Ters

Every small town needs a signature event. Spread Eagle's is a free water ski show, and it is better than it has any right to be.

The Badwater Ski-Ters perform at Vagabond Park on the Menominee River in Spread Eagle. The team's website now advertises 67 years of show skiing. That is a long run for a show whose signature move is humans stacking themselves on skis.

The format is simple. The 2026 main show begins every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:00 PM and features music, themed acts, jumps, ballet lines, pyramids, and performances by skiers of all ages. They also hold a 5:30 PM work-in-progress show, so you can watch them rehearse. They perform rain or shine, which is either dedication or a refusal to check the forecast.

Don't mistake this for a rinky-dink operation. A cheese pyramid helped: members formed a three-level "cheese" pyramid at a show, which is the most Wisconsin sentence ever written. Admission is free, and you bring a chair or blanket for seating and they'll have the rest covered.

Unincorporated, Underpopulated, Unbothered

Spread Eagle has no government of its own and is governed by the Town of Florence. Nobody here has the paperwork to be a mayor, and nobody seems to mind. Your local official is a town board in Florence, 5 miles west.

The surrounding landscape is mostly wild. The 7,400 acre Spread Eagle Barrens State Natural Area is a large expanse of pine barrens and bracken grasslands in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin DNR notes that despite the barrens name, many plants and animals call it home, in landscapes dominated by scattered jack pine, red pine, scrub oak, and quaking aspen. You can hike, bike, snowshoe, cross country ski, and fish in the lakes and streams.

If you need a "real" city, you will be crossing a state line. The closest large city is Iron Mountain, Michigan, 6 miles away. Spread Eagle is part of the Iron Mountain, MI–WI Micropolitan Statistical Area. That means Spread Eagle works as a quiet bedroom community with a lake view.

Should You Visit Spread Eagle, Wisconsin?

Yes, with the right expectations. Come in summer. Come for the lakes, the pine barrens, and a free water ski show. Stay in a cabin: the lakes, rivers, and woodlands have attracted many people to live here, vacation, or buy summer homes and cottages. Camping is nearby too, since Nicolet National Forest is in Florence County.

Just know that in the off-season, the town you find may be the town the roasters described: lots of cottages, few lights on, and a very peaceful quiet. Honestly, that is the selling point.
