Waverly got its name because founder Stephen Pavatt was a big fan of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley Novels.
Waverly's first courthouse, built in 1836, was modeled on the state capitol building in Nashville.
Before it was Waverly, the town site showed up on maps as Pavatts.
