Crixás takes its name from the Crixás Indians, who lived in the region when gold was discovered there.
Crixás was founded in 1812 by Portuguese cattle ranchers, and its name means 'river of beef' in a local dialect.
The first explorer in the Crixás area was Manoel Rodrigues Tomar, who arrived in 1726.
